Here is what both communicate to Google and Search Engines:
301 Redirects - Hello, Search Engines: My page is no longer available here, and has permanently moved to a new page. So please remove it from your index data and pass (give) credit to the new page.
When to Apply 301
- As default – this is the preferred method
- Pages which are being permanently moved or replaced
- Domains that are permanently moved (acquisitions, rebranding, etc.)
- 404 pages and expired content
Canonical: Hello, Search Engines: I have many versions of this page (or content), please only index this version. I will make visible other pages for people to see, but do not include them in your index and please pass (give) credit to my preferred page.
When to Apply Canonical
- When you are not able to implement 301 or take too much time
- Website has duplicate content but you want to keep both pages live
- Website has dynamic pages with multiple URLs of a single page.
- Site-wide considerations like (domain/page/index.html vs. domain/page/ for the same page) can be easy with canonical

Recently Google's Webmaster Central blog has updated great post regarding
authorship and its implementation.
1.Authorship is for Content & Articles By One Author
When it’s time to apply authorship, user should be aware about the page which he/she want to use for authorship. Authorship should not be apply for the pages which show the list of the articles and feed for the articles.
2.Authorship - Not For Product Description Pages or Property Listings
Google says that the authorship should not be used for the product description pages or property listings. Even you have rewritten the description, it not advisable.Readers and users click on a links which have an authorship markup to read an article or content, not for the product listing or property listed page.
3.Authorship is not for Multiple Authors
It is not advisable for the authorship which page has multiple authors. Although, you can choose to only for tag one of the authors. Right now don’t worry because Google is looking for the way to implement or a solution if there is more than one author on the particular page.
4.Authorship is for Real People
Google gives the priority to only real people. So don’t try to use the fake identity to take the profit of multiple authorship.
5.rel=author vs. rel=publisher
Google noted that the rel=publisher and rel=author are to totally independent linking usages. Rel=publisher is an easier way to show a type of business authorship, because it links a business Google+ page with the business website.
6.Articles in Different Languages, Link to the Same Google+ Profile
If you have written content in different languages, you can go ahead and link to the same Google+ profile. There is no need to create multiple Google+ pages for the same author to target different languages.
7.Do not want to show Authorship
If you do not to visible your authorship, you can make you profile private, so it will not visible for search results. Or you can remove the mark up and profile links from the articles pages as well.
